Naming Accounts

The long name of an account should be as close as possible to the title of an award or, for internally funded accounts, descriptive of its purpose. The long name and short name of the GL and SL master account should match. The 20 character short name of an account should consist of three parts separated by a forward slash [department, 3-4 characters]/[award # or purpose]/[PI initials, 2 characters].

For example, MATH/DMS-22984765/MM could be an account in the Math department for NSF award DMS-22984765 for which the PI is Michael Maus.

Another example, ASTR/RES-INCENT/FS could be for a 2-ledger research incentive account in Astrophysics for Franklin Stein.

Look at other accounts in the department and be sure to use consistent abbreviations for the department in the short name. If the account is not for a particular individual, such as an unrestricted account for a department, then the second forward slash and initials can be omitted. Avoid the use of special characters in the short name except for forward slash, dash, underscore, and space.
